pet insuranceYour puppy will be a part of your family and you want to make sure you have adequate coverage in place should an unexpected accident, or illness arise. NutritionWe start your puppy on TLC and I will email you a welcome package once your puppy is 6 weeks old, after his or her vet check up.
What, when, and how to feed puppies becomes a major issue on the first day. Many new owners worry that without his mother’s milk, their pup is going to have a hard time adjusting to his new home. It is a good idea to continue feeding the same type and brand of food for at least a 2 month. Most people are soon surprised how well puppies make it through this transition because they do not understand how far along dogs are in their development at 7 weeks of age. Most puppies start eating dog food at 21/28 days of age, puppies are ready to start on something in addition to Mom’s milk. We take dry puppy food, soak it in warm water for 10 minutes and then give it to the litter when they are 21-28 days old. This takes a huge burden off the mother, especially when puppies teeth are coming in. @ 7 week old puppy can eat dry puppy food , no problem. Our puppies are raised in a non-kennel environment where they are allowed to experience the world as they grow. They are taken out for little romps and walks on our property. They walk over the ground where the rabbits and numerous other animals around our house. Our puppies enjoy learning about life and living in the real world, which means they are exposed to real world things, like giardia and coccidia. We do everything we can to prevent this but we will not restrict our puppies to a kennel life. Puppies can be infected with giardia by simple things such as walking over dirt and licking their paws, drinking water from a puddle, licking the grass where a wild bird pooped, etc.. |
After spay or neuter surgery, PLEASE consider using a onesie or a surgical suit for the comfort of your puppy instead of the dreaded cone, THANK YOU!!!
HOW DO I POTTY TRAIN MY PUPPY TO MY ENTIRE HOUSE?
Effectively housetraining your puppy makes a HUGE difference in the success of you and a dog living harmoniously together. This is a big deal and we want to help you do it right!
We start housetraining a puppy one room at a time. The idea is to keep their living space small enough to set them up for success. We use crates, pens and baby gates to limit our puppy’s access to the rest of our home. Once your puppy keeps their current space consistently clean without accidents for at least a week, is ringing bells in that area consistently to go out, then add another room to the current living space. If they were in the kitchen, add the living room, etc.
Each time we add more space, we take our puppy out to go potty then immediately come inside and have a play session in the new space. Try to spend enough time there your puppy will need to go again upon which we help them find the bells from the new space. So the first few times you include the upstairs as included space, you may need to use a leash to walk your puppy to the bells from upstairs until they learn that, “Yep, I must ring the bells no matter where I am in order to go outside and yes potty must be done outside.”
Dogs do not generalize like we do so each new environment means behaviors must be retaught there. They pick up on the behaviors in the new space more quickly though. We repeat this process until our entire house is included. Once they generalize a few new rooms, it goes faster...we may introduce the entire basement at once but our puppies are usually six months old before we even get to that point. As a time frame, we wait until after one year to completely trust a puppy in our home. Also note, every puppy is unique and we work with each puppy on their level. If they are not ready by one year, we keep helping them by limiting their living space until they are ready.
It’s never too early, or too late, to begin training! At Baxter & Bella, we have built an entire online doggy school with over 75 lesson plans and field trips to help you teach your dog a wide variety of awesome behaviors. Need help in this area? Give our online puppy school a try and gain access to personalized advice from our trainers any time you want!
Happy Training!
