How is an umbilical hernia treated ?
If the hernia has not closed by the time of spaying or neutering, surgical repair of the hernia is recommended. The surgery can be performed at the time of spaying and neutering. The fibrous or scar tissues that have formed around the hernia are dissected out or removed, and the defect is closed with sutures. Most umbilical hernias pose no health threats and are painless to the puppy.
NOTE ABOUT DENTAL AND JAW DEVELOPMENT:
Dental malocclusions are a common problem in poodle mixes due to the long narrow snout of poodles and the wide shorter snout of most other breeds. Although it is common, I do try to avoid it. So if it pops up in a particular pairing, I don't pair the two dogs again. However because its so random it is very hard to predict and therefore control. It is good to note that the top and bottom jaws grow at different rates making malocclusions or "poor bites" even more common. I advise not pulling any teeth until after the dog is fully grown. Most dogs outgrow poor bites with no intervention.
